Photon Setup Failed at "Verify Product Ownership"

@ScruffR, @kennethlimcp,
OK, I fired up photon #3 and attempted to configure using the IOS app.

  • On the first attempt it failed at “Verify Product Ownership”. I was about to follow Kenneth’s CLI procedure above but thought I would attempt using IOS again.
  • On the second attempt it succeeded. Perhaps I mis-typed the wifi credentials on the first attempt, or perhaps it was something else, but it is now happily breathing quietly on my bench.

I expect to be testing my remaining units in the next few weeks and will let you know how they go.

Thanks
Dave

Hi,

I had the same issue with one of my devices. I tried to reflash it with “particle setup” and now the mobile setup is saying me “Setup process couldn’t disconnect from the Particle device Wi-Fi network.”.
I’ve tried to reset everything without success. Do I have a dead device?

That doesn't actually refresh anything...
Try updating the CLI, then put the device in DFU mode and try 'Particle update'. Assuming you've installed the tools correctly, that should do something. Then, DFU once more, try 'particle flash --usb tinker'.
Put it in listening mode, and give 'Particle serial wifi' a go.

When I said reflash, I meant that I:

  1. just have installed CLI first time
  2. put the device in DFU mode
  3. executed "Particle update"

Now I've tried all this with "particle flash --usb tinker". And the result was absolutely the same.

I tried 'Particle serial wifi' and it finished well and after that the device switched to "CONNECTING TO THE CLOUD" state and stuck in it.
After the device reset I was at the same place.

The final result is:

Obtaining device information...
Setting up device id 28002b000a47343432313031
Requesting public key from the device...
Setting the magical cloud claim code...
Telling the Photon to apply your Wi-Fi configuration...
The Photon will now attempt to connect to your Wi-Fi network...

Configuration complete! You've just won the internet!
? Would you like to return this computer to the wireless network you just configured? Yes
! It doesn't look like your Photon has made it to the cloud yet.

Next time, try writing what you mean, since there are too many options for us to guess what you've done. But the steps seem okay.

What would that be, blinking cyan? The LED color(s) can tell us a lot, so if you wouldn't mind sharing what those are, that might help.

The final result looks more like something from 'particle setup', rather than 'particle serial wifi'.

Yes it blinking cyan rapidly like shown on the page https://docs.particle.io/guide/getting-started/modes/photon/ in the "CONNECTING TO THE CLOUD" section.

Yes, I posted final result from the "particle setup". I tried it after "particle serial wifi"

Are there ANY other colors during the blinking cyan? Blinking cyan means the device does have a wifi connection, but can’t connect to the cloud. Is there any possibility something in between is blocking the connection? The router and/or firewalls are know to be problematic in certain cases. Any captive portals perhaps?

It makes several cycles in which it

  1. rapidly blinking cyan for about 5 seconds
  2. rapidly blinking yellow for about half second
after about 10 cycles it starts to blinking rapidly cyan forever .

I have 4 Photons and two different wifi networks. 3 of them works well on both networks, the only one doesn’t work on any network.

Right, that’s the kind of information you might want to mention upfront, since those colors are there for a reason.

That said, it seems there’s an issue with your keys. Following these steps might offer the solutions. Give them a try and let us know what happened. Please try to include any and all information. Having us make (educated) guesses as to what might be going on only makes more confusing than need be.

What steps do you mean? I did everything you wrote before several times to answer your questions.

  1. installed CLI
  2. put the device in DFU mode
  3. executed “Particle update”
  4. put the device in DFU mode
  5. executed “particle flash --usb tinker”
  6. put the device in listening mode
  7. executed “Particle serial wifi”

the result:

The device makes several cycles in which it

  1. rapidly blinking cyan for about 4-10 times
  2. blinks cyan 2-3 times faster then in #1 several times
  3. blinking yellow (with a little bit red) several times very fast, like in #2
    then starts again from #1

after about 10 cycles it starts to blinking rapidly cyan forever.

Alright, that one’s on me, I forgot to paste the actual link :disappointed:
https://docs.particle.io/support/troubleshooting/key-management/photon/#how-to-change-your-key-

Bingo! Everything work well now.

Thanks a lot!

Hello Moors, I am facing the same issue i.e photon get connected to cloud and blink cyan but does not get link up with my account. I tried to link with another id and it got connected immediately. Is there any limitation too add number of photon to particular account ? i am unable to add any photon to my account . I’m stuck any idea ?

How are you trying to add these devices?

Using Android App

Could you try logging out&in again to make sure you’ve got the correct set of credentials?

@Moors7 Thanks for your instant reply . I tried logging in/out but same issue persists. It fails in the last step i.e. Verify Product Ownership.

Is the device able to connect to the cloud, i.e. breathing cyan? You can only claim devices when they’re connected.

Yes as mentioned earlier its breathing cyan and i am unable to claim only from my account. It can be claimed from another accounts.

Actually you before said blinking cyan which is not breathing - that's an important distinction in troubleshooting
