Thanks @Len, sounds like a different problem to the issue that I am describing, which is no IP address is being served by the Photon’s DHCP service.

Hi @Len, @UMD, @rickkas7, Yes, I’ve seen this behavior on stand alone Photons on a desk, as well as units installed on a circuit board. UMD’s description of ‘no IP address being served by the DHCP service’ is a much better description of my problem. If I supply my own static IP address for the configuration I know with certainty iOS accepts this information and it connects without the exclamation mark (but still says No Internet Connection). And I can get to the SoftAP page.
One test I will repeat separately is whether an Android device connects straight away, or if it exhibits the same issue. My hunch (from a recent customer experience) is that since her Android connected right away this issue is iOS specific (ZTE Zmax running on Metro PCS network). Was there ever a resolution to this issue? I’m experiencing similar with a run of the mill softAP app running on my Photon. I cannot connect to the Photon’s Wifi network and it seems that the iPhone’s security is preventing it from attaching citing: “no internet connection.”

Could this be related to iOS setting WiFi Assist that will use cellular as a backup network for requests when it is detected the wifi network is in does not have internet connectivity.
It’s a real pain for all soft AP setups, not just particle.
That’s a great theory! I’m in the group of people where SoftAP and setup work correctly with iOS 10, but I tried turning Wifi Assist off (it was on) and SoftAP worked properly in both cases. I’m still thinking it is some setting, because I get the “Security Recommendation” (expected, since it’s not encrypted) but I don’t get the “No Internet Connection” warning at the top level of the Wi-Fi settings on two different devices.
I had already tried without WiFi assist, and had similar results. The WiFi setup shows the same message: “unable to connect to internet” and I cannot make a SoftAP connection. This is with confirmed working app that is working on another photon, though I don’t want to mess with that one for obvious reasons.
I won’t dismiss this as an iPhone issue yet. When I couldn’t connect via SoftAP, I tried re-entering WiFi credentials using particle setup in the CLI. I was able to get as far as verification of the credentials I entered, but it would not connect. Using particle serial wifi would connect it, however strange.

Have I tried the Particle app to connect? Yes but:
- I select the “+” tab,
- I go to the iPhone’s wifi setup and connect to the Photon
- it notices that I connected to a Photon, indicating as expected with a notification
- I tap the notification and return the the Particle app
… it cannot connect.
not a minor issue we are having.
FYI, I live in an area with very poor mobile service, one bar (it’s AT&T so that could mean no signal at all 
). Would the inability of the iPhone to connect to WiFi alternative to the SoftAP be the problem?
you may be able to test this by putting your iPhone in airplane mode, turning on the WiFi and then trying to connect to a SoftAP.
Another good test! I put the phone in airplane mode with Wi-Fi on. Then switched to the Wi-Fi to the Photon-xxxx network for a Photon in listening mode running a custom Soft AP page. It displayed Security Recommendation, but did not display No Internet Connection.
Then used Safari to browse to 192.168.0.1, and it connected immediately. That was with an iPhone 6 Plus running 10.1.1.
It is indeed a bizarre problem!
So, with a little help from @rickkas7, I found something that “causes” my problem:

When I comment it out of the prototype SoftAP from @RWB here (I merely modified it to remove the blocking in loop()) and It works. That is to say, I can connect to the Particle’s AccessPoint (I see a check mark next to the device’s wifi on my iPhone) retrieve its webpage and enter the network credentials to connect the Photon to my Wifi.
With it inside of loop(), the iPhone never fully connects to the Photon’s WiFi and therefore cannot connect to its webpage.
Left in, it (obviously) is blocking the execution of loop() but is also affecting the SoftAP execution, and I don’t know how/why (particularly because it worked before).
So there were TWO significant changes since I tested my SoftAP code last (where it worked) and that is the release of 0.6.n and upgrade of my iPhone. So I compiled the code with the above block left in against 0.5.3 and it doesn’t work either. That is to say, I never get a check mark next to the Photon’s WiFi when i attempt to connect to it.
Below is the code I used. Again, keeping in the block above renders it unworkable. Can anyone tell me if they can corroborate this little test?

Huh? Since I’m not seeing any SYSTEM_THREAD(ENABLED) in that code, I’m surprised that loop() would be executed at all during Listening Mode

Your code worked for me. I flashed it unmodified to a Photon running 0.6.0. The D7 LED was blinking until I put it in listening mode, then it stopped blinking, as expected.
I switched my iPhone (iOS 10.1.1) to the Photon Wi-Fi network. I got the Security Recommendation as expected, but I did not get the No Internet Connection warning that some people get. Then I opened Safari to 192.168.0.1 and your page displayed properly.

Adding SYSTEM_THREAD(ENABLED) blocks loop() (no flashing led) when not connected to wifi, but I can connect to SoftAP.
I wonder if the geographic placement of SYSTEM_THREAD(ENABLED) in my code affects anything? I can look at that.

Well, with the assistance of @rickkas7 and @ScruffR, they were able to provoke some thought on my part… “Why is today unlike any other day?”, or “why me?”
Well I looked over all my WiFi settings and I am using AT&T’s WiFi Calling. It allows you to connect to a WiFi connection and make/receive calls. It also automatically enables (with a weak mobile signal) that capability. So, its an app actively switching WiFI <=> Internet <=> Mobile Connection.
I realized that this may have some effects on my little issue. I removed the Profile it creates and voilà, WiFi SoftAP is now working for me.
So, if your customers are struggling with a SoftAP connection, you may wish to have them review their iPhone’s setup looking for AT&T WiFi Calling Profile.

I just got my first Photon and went to set it up out of the box (it’s part of a Maker Kit, if that matters) and ran into this issue. I connect to the Wi-fi network, the first time I did get the drop down notification that I connected from the particle app, but then once I clicked over it kept cycling since I “wasn’t connected.” I went back to the Wi-fi screen in settings and it says there is “no internet connection” - I tried turning off wi-fi assist but that didn’t work. Was there ever any solution to this problem? It’s my first photon and I was really looking forward to getting started with it.

I don’t know exactly what helped, but it seems that a simple reboot of your smartphone could already work. Turn off all applications that are in the multitask system and then start the Particle and Settings application. From thereon everything should work.

@Len Thanks for the response! Yes, I’m using an iphone. I tried restarting, closing all other applications, even updating the iphone software (I was a verison or two behind) and rebooting again - it still doesn’t seem to be working. Any ideas?
