I have 3 photons now doing the same thing, they are all connected to my work wifi, but when I try to connect them to another wifi, making sure the LED is blinking blue, I get “connecting to photon” then an error “please try running setup again after resetting your photon and putting it back in blinking blue listen mode if needed.” I have tried doing this several times with the two I have with me, and nothing changes. On the third, I have reflashed tinker over the CLI and it is all but useless now, I cannot connect it to any other network and it doesn’t allow OTA updates. Any ideas?
Could you try placing it in Safe Mode first, and then going into Listening mode? It might be that your own code is interfering.

Neither photon will enter safe mode, holding down both buttons, releasing reset, holding setup until it flashes magenta, then releasing setup, it flashes white once then blinks green. It never gets to breathing magenta as stated in the docs.
Here is my code on one of them, the only thing they have in common is the softap https page, is there something wrong in the code that keeps it in an infinite loop or something interfering with the wifi connect?

As far as the code you may want to add a delay to the loop. I believe that particle will only take 1 publish per second (it may take a burst of 4, but then you have to wait until 4 second are up before it will take more).
Someone else will have to help get it to flash for you. Still learning…

Considering it still has no credentials, that seems like expected behavior, don't you think? Try placing it in Listening mode while it's doing that and give setup another shot.

This is not how you’d use the STARTUP() macro. This line should go after your two include lines.
Do add a way to rate-limit your publishes as @carbuthn has suggested.
Can you not set the credentials via the SoftAP page you have set up in your application?
Since you have CLI, have you tried providing the credentials via particle serial wifi plus manuale entry (no autoscan!)?

Won’t be leaving work for awhile so I’m installing the particle toolchain on my work computer. I’ll let you guys know the progress as soon as I’m done.
So I reflashed my photon over serial, with the factory tinker app, it flashes magenta, then comes up flashing blue, If I try to connect to it over the app, the photon ID comes up and when I touch it it pops up “connecting to photon” but it flashes this message 5 times, with the “busy” circle going around, then comes up with:
“Error
Please try running setup again after resetting your Photon and putting it back in blinking blue listen mode if needed.”
If I try to setup wifi over my computer, I select the network name, then enter the password and it says success but I never get past a green flashing light.
While in DFU mode, try doing “particle update”, as well as “particle flash --usb tinker”, then, hold SETUP until the LED starts blinking blue rapidly, indicating the credentials have been erased. Once that’s done, give ‘particle serial wifi’ a shot, and enter the information manually.
Ok, so two of them I was able to recover using the instructions you gave @Moors7, the last one I brought home, not able to get into safe mode, in DFU mode, tried particle update, says successful, reboots and gives a hard fault with SOS, put back in DFU, tried particle flash --usb tinker, says successful, reboots and gives a hard fault with SOS. I found another discussion here: Photon in RED SOS hard fault mode, unable to put into safe mode. Looks like this one may be down for the count, unless a new development has come up since this post.

To narrow down the root of your WiFi troubles, try flashing a simple sketch with SYSTEM_MODE(MANUAL) which lets you control each step of the connection process

WiFi.ready()

Particle.connected()
Paricle.process()
And see where the process trips.
If you wish, you can also add

@ScruffR, I’ll try this in about an hour when I get home, I did update the CLI, but I’m not sure what version it is, I’ll check this too. This is my personal photon so I hope I can recover it, I’ve got big plans! About the softap code on the board, I think I’ve either copied something wrong from the repo or the repo has some corruption in it, either way I’ve deleted all apps with that firmware and I’ll try later with it.
