but the shields what gives, why are they are so large ?

To answer the original question - one reason might be Arduino compatibility.
For users that do have Arduino shields this might be a way to reuse their investments.
maybe so, point accepted.
but I first looked at the relay shield, ok I only needed 2 relays, but its runway huge
