Hi Corey. I have now setup a number of photons and happy that this fix has worked.
Hey Kevin,
Thanks for letting me know this, as it it is helpful for us going forward. Also, I havenât forgotten about the longer explanation about why logout/login step works. That will come soon!

I spent several hours trying to connect. I have numerous routers in the house, but until I put the device next to my Apple Airport express, I could not get it set up. Same problem as above. Just received 3 photons today. They were shipped about 5 days ago. Not sure of SW. I moved the device about 20 feet and it shows offline after all that work. When you figure out the magic, let us know. My routers are Buffalo and Apple. All have security. I donât mind looking further or loading new SW if it helps.
@Chuck, are you saying you managed to setup the Photons and get them connected to the only when they are near the router?
I hope this thread isnât splitting into two different problems. Are those experiencing network problems failing at âVerify Product Ownershipâ or are they failing in some other way?
In my case I would be surprised if router and network problems are the culprit because I was able to set up 19 out of 20 Photons just fine.
Iâm having the Failed at Verify Product Ownership and have re-flashed the Photon and run the Key Doctor but get Error saving key to device. Iâm getting very frustrated at trying to get this up and running, any help from Particle would be appreciated.
Is there a solution for the âVerifying product Ownershipâ error. What says Particle for the unusable Photon.
This from @mdma :
NB! only do this if the device has NEVER connected to the cloud before and has the intermittent red blink while fast flashing blue. If the device has previously connected to the cloud successfully then the problem lies elsewhere and these steps are not required.
Using Particle CLI, first generate a new key:
particle keys new
Then put the device in DFU mode (hold down setup, hit reset once, release setup when flashing yellow) and flash this new key:
dfu-util -d 2b04:d006 -a 1 -s 34 -D device.der
Then hit reset. Device should connect to the cloud.
Fixed the problem with my bad Photon.
I use the Particle CLI for setup as it is faster and easier than the IOS app:
particle identify
// select and copy the dev ID
particle setup wifi
particle device add 2f0019000447332303243233
particle device rename 2f0019000447332303243233 "Name"
Ok. My Draytek Router has Filtering the Cloud Connection HandShake. Draytek Firewall General Setup -> Data Filter âDisableâ (for test purposes) and the Cloud Connection LED is Breating Magenta.
My photon hung at the verifying stage too. With the help of this thread, I managed to get it all working and happily talking to Tinker, so I thought Iâd post what I had to do to get it working (I lucked out⌠not much).
My problem turned out to be that my wireless router was set for 802.11b/g. I changed the router to only 802.11g, and then as soon as I connected my photon to power, it connected to the wireless, got to the cloud (breathing cyan), and then jumped into a firmware update (blinking magenta).
That wasnât the end of the story, as when I tried to connect to it with my phone to claim it, the Android app hung at the connecting-to-photon mode. In that state, the app canât be killed, and doesnât appear in the list of running apps, so I ended up having to power the phone off and back on again to kill the app (after rebooting, I also reentered my WiFi credentials, just to make sure it was back to normal and knew it was set to G-only). However, once that was done, it managed to connect, although it kept thinking someone else had claimed the device. I ended up having to click âChange Ownerâ, after which everything works just like it was supposed to and I was talking to it with Tinker and controlling the D7 LED within seconds.
A bit of a rough start, and Iâm not sure I would recommend one of these to a friend until these sorts of issues are ironed out, but OK
I had similar symptoms (setup through App fails at verifying ownership, setup through particle-cli fails as described above). The resolution in my case was to switch my wireless to use WPA2-AES.
The error in the iOS App was âsetup process failed at claiming your particle deviceâ.
Having the same problem Disabled secured wireless connection - no luck. Device is flashing with cyan
@Aka_Abe, besides flashing cyan, do you notice anything else?
Hi,
It sometimes flashed with one red. But with help of mdma I have revived device. Steps were:
- Update device to altest build
- Restore device to factory settings.
- Flash to it public key
- Setup with iOS app
But I still have another one device. I had the same issue. But now it failed on setup credentials via iOS app. From Mac I have kernel panic on completion of setup wifi procedure
Tried to flash new app via web ide and particle dev without success. After made factory reset and got the same iusse with ownership. Steps from my reviving post does not help (
i am facing the same issue⌠i tried all the things mentioned.
latest firmware, new keys. keys doctor etcâŚ
this is frustratingâŚ
it goes into listen mode after resetâŚ
What happens if you give it credentials? Does it ever make it out of blinking blue?
yes, it does. i used CLI to set the address⌠couple of times it went to blinking green forever - i guess looking for ip address.
this is not consistent outcome.
Do the following:
- Place Photon in DFU mode
- Use
particle update
- Once that is done, hold on the SETUP button until the Photon blinks blue rapid
-
particle serial wifi
and see send in Wifi credentials - Let us know what is the RGB led colour
flashing cyan with intermittent red is the result
