Trying Ubuntu24.03 1.1.32 & 1.1.35

Hi

I have updated my tachyon to current state of ubuntu-24.04 RoW desktop version ie v 1.1.35.

Exact archive is tachyon-ubuntu-24.04-RoW-desktop-1.1.35.zip. Just before, I tried v 1.1.32

Global feeling is both versions are much more robust than initial beta release of ubuntu-24.04. Good work !

However, there are still some issues very visible that I would like to report here. Probably some of them are already known …

1/ Plenty of crashes when trying to go to settings. report is about /etc/apt/sources.list.d/particle.list being malformed

  • This was not happening with version 1.1.32
  • Easy to fix. Line 2 of that file needs to be removed as it obviously the issue

2/ Wifi connectivity is a bit .. messy

  • it is better than with 1.1.32 as it is stable. 1.1.32 was constantly disconnecting. But like 1.1.32, wifi on 1.1.35 is incredibly slow: 02.Mb/s. With ubuntu 20, I got at least 200Mb/s so it is not a hardware issue or a wifi issue (same network, same place)

  • strangely, I get a very limited set of wifi networks available. With ubuntu 20, I see 10+ networks around me. with ubuntu 24, I see only 3 networks (including mine). I have tried to scan multiple times, same result.

  • led is glowing green, so officially it is connected but not on particle cloud

  • using particle console page, I can see the device is online ! This is confirmed if I trigger the rainbow: device is connected to particle cloud. So led status is not reflecting the real connectivity status

  • trying to opening a remote shell from particle console always fail. I guess this is because wifi is too slow and timeout

3/ Very annoying issue: I am french so I use a french keyboard.

  • The Ux to change keyboard does not propose anything

  • with 1.1.32 it was possible to set the keyboard layout to french (AZERTY) doing

    sudo dpkg-reconfigure keyboard-configuration

    and restart

  • with 1.1.35, this has no impact. Maybe there is a better way to change keyboard layout ?

So globally, If I try to use the desktop, I have a keyboard issue. If to avoid that, I use remote shell, I have a wifi issue. Ubuntu 24.04 1.1.35 is not very usable in that state

Hoping it helps and eager to get next iteration..

Obviously, no issue to provide any kind of log, trace or do any experiment …

Thx for any advice !!

Hi there! Thank you so much for the feedback! We’re looking into the malformed particle apt file.

Question for you – what option are you using to change the keyboard?

We have another version coming out this week with the updated latest kernel, and we’ll share that with you when available. Once again, thanks for trying the latest & for your feedback.

Hi

I am a bit embarrassed about this keyboard issue:

1/ I have looped back between ubuntu 24.04 1.1.32 & 1.1.35 I was using the statement

sudo dpkg-reconfigure keyboard-configuration

to change the keyboard layout. No way I can make it work with both versions. Full contradiction with my previous mail :frowning:

2/ Worst: if now I try the settings app with 1.1.35 like every one does, and wait a little bit, I can see the french keyboard coming and I can activate it without any cabalistic statement and without a restart.

I do not understand where the idea about dpkg-reconfiguration came from.

My guess: the only change I did in my process was to immediately fix the typo in config file before doing anything else. Maye it has an impact. Or I was definitely too impatient ….

So in conclusion:

1/ 1.1.35 has everything to deal with keyboard layouts.

2/ I confim the strange and dramatic slowness of wifi connection. Ubuntu 20 is full speed on same wifi

3/ speaking of Ubuntu 20, I have downloaded the last iteration (80 ?) and had the good surprise to discover the battery is no more needed. I was thinking it was possibe only for recent iterations on Ubuntu 24.04. Can you remine me where are the release notes for each flavor of Ubuntu ?

Next steps : checking status of my pimoroni SSD card with last iteration of Ubuntu 24.04. And again, if you need more trace, logs about the wifi issue, I would happy to provide it

Thx

I tried 1.1.35, and didn’t see any change in wifi speed (at least on 2.4), but it appears that the console terminal does not open, as the connection to particle cloud keeps dropping. However ssh on my local network is working fine, so the wifi connection seems to be working fine.
