Tachyon setup issue - windows

i have limited linux availablility .. using an older intel stick oi have no usb available to connect to tachyon . when i install any windows version of the cli the version shows as 1.11 and doesnt seem to accept any of the needed commands jay

Hey Jay!

The CLI should be at version 3.40.x or so (give or take a minor version or so).

Did you try and install the latest version from the CLI installer page yet?

If you did and its still 1.11, please let us know - we’ll have to figure out how to uninstall the old one and install the new one!

Thanks

Nick.

after several version installs - all 1.11 - i deleted the dir with the cli in it and did a fresh install … success .however in pressing the mode button the tachyon appears to be blinking green and does not get passed step 2 of setup

Hi, step 2 is where the setup waits to detect the Tachyon?

If so, a couple of times when the process got stuck there for me, I was not using a good enough USB-C cable. I used a different/better one and the process continued on its own (cable with both ends USB-C would be ideal - or might be a must).

Best,

The cable has been usb-a to usb-c . I will give the “c” to “c” cable on a windows computer tomorrow. Thx

So the color of the light (yellow/green) is not an issue? Or indicates a faulty connection?>

that would mean the Tachyon is waiting on the computer to proceed with the setup. I do not think it’s an issue right now. Try the end to end usb C cable and let us know.

Good luck!

The yellow/green is correct. The instructions said yellow only, but it is green/yellow. I kept rebooting to try to get yellow only. I ended just letting it flash green/yellow and continued with instructions on setup webpage and installation went fine.

Hey folks,

If you don’t program the board, the device is in manufacturing mode and it will boot up in a playground mode using the manufacturing firmware. In this mode, it`s flashing green.

Programming mode (hold the button for 3 seconds when it’s red) is supposed to be yellow, but I 100% agree that it can look greenish as well. These LEDs are hard to tune… Maybe we need to make the LED flash in a different pattern?

Setup needs to follow the sequence of instructions found in this doc - it downloads the image into the flash that contains the main OS image.

100% agree on the USB cable - some USB-A to USB-C cables only support 4 pin mode which isn’t enough for the installation.

Thanks

Nick

Still struggling…tried a couple usb-c cables on a windows 10 laptop (only device i have with usb c) ..no luck.. three linux computers i have dont have usbc.

This issue has been resolved. Laptop with chromeos and Linux emulation

After several challenges got it up and running only to forget which password I created. How do you connect to the cases button. Was there a cable provided?

Also how do you deal with one of the case posts blocking the second usb port

I’m not sure but in this case running setup again might be needed.

What do you mean? What case?

I am unable to fit the second usb-c as it’s blocked by a lid mounting pilon

hey, sorry, I’m not familiar with that case. Maybe if you post full details about someone from Particle can help you sort it out?

Hey JayC,

We use something like this internally:

There are all sorts of cables that have a flat USB-C on the end of it and then various termination options - hope there is one that matches your requirements!

(the reason we are using flat cable heads is that we found unless we make a box that is extremely wide, USB-C cables could not plug in due to the connector and strain relief end needing up to 2.5” of space, depending on which cable you were using, we went with the adapter model. cables start at around $3 depending on your source)

Thanks

Nick.

Thx nick..do they support power and video? A concern is they are usb 2.0 but usb 1 calls for 3.1

Jay

Hey jayc

Yes! I am not sure if this if the exact one, but I bought a similar looking one from amazon and it worked great with video. I’m posting as they tend to look like this - I think they are for the backs of smart phones to route out the USB-C socket, but they happen to work for us as well.

Thanks nick ...so usb4 cables will work with power and video?

Jay

@Jayc

Yes, I am using Thunderbolt 4 / USB 4 cable for video and power. Maybe not necessary for the cost and a USB 3.2 compatible USB C cable would suffice for you.
