JST connector to use with Internet Button

Hi

I want to use LIPO battery 2000MAH 3.7V to power my Internet Button. I bought JST connector https://www.sparkfun.com/products/9749.

After soldering it to the space provided on Internet button and plugging in the LIPO battery, my internet button doesn’t power up. Am I using the right JST connector or LIPO battery? I am not able to find these accessories on particle store

Punam

Have you checked polarity?
(black wire from LiPo -> GND, red wire from LiPi -> Vin)

And as the datasheet states Vin expects min 3.6V (max 5.5V), are you sure your LiPo will never go below that?

Thanks ScruffR for replying, I have a Electron that comes with LIPO battery (2000 MAH) and it works with JST connector fitted on Electron board.

If I try as you suggested (black wire from LiPo -> GND, red wire from LiPi -> Vin), this LIPO battery doesn’t fit in sparkfun JST connector I have. Any idea what’s JST connector electron comes with?

JST connectors are pretty much standard.

On the electron, it’s the vertical type - https://www.sparkfun.com/products/8613

I guess you bought the right-angle one - https://www.sparkfun.com/products/8612 but it should still work…

Do you have a photo? I tested and it works well with both the right-angle and vertical type.

I have https://www.sparkfun.com/products/9749, 2-pin, through-hole PH series JST connector which doesn’t work

Seems like those are smaller in terms of width that’s why you are unable to insert the Lipo end, right?

Yes, it doesn’t fit when tried (black wire from LiPo -> GND, red wire from LiPi -> Vin). Picture attached below

Oh yes… Definitely the wrong connector. Sorry about that! Let me figure out where’s a good place to put the specific link for the correct connector…

For now, it might work if you slide off the white plastic ( from the connector). It might be tough though. The best option is to replace with a correct connector.

I will order vertical type from spark fun and try that, thanks for your help!

Let us know

I cut the top plastic as you suggested with hobby knife https://www.sparkfun.com/products/9200 and it works, Yay!

It could also be that you just needed to turn the connector round to face towards the center of the PCB. This way Vin & GND would have been flipped around and you could have inserted the plug without removing the polarity protection.
With the 90° connectors you also need to choose the correct left or right version.

Yup! Supposed to face towards the center of the PCB, using an SMD JST connector. The SMD ones from sparkfun definitely work, they’re the ones I designed around. The through-holes are for wires or headers.

This one- https://www.sparkfun.com/products/8612

yeah, that might have worked too but that would have covered the center and won’t let me use the hole for hook if I want to install it.
