How to update libraries - both workbench and on-line

Wish to update Adafruit_SSD1306@0.0.2 to @2.2.1
And Adafruit_GFX_Library@0.0.0 to @1.7.1
Both libs are more than several years old, and the samples don’t work.

Welcome to the Particle Community.

Better versions are the ones with _RK at the end.
In the web IDE, when selecting the library if you click on the ‘i’ you will see a drop down of the versions available.
I would use ADAFRUIT_SS1306_RK and ADAFRUIT_GFX_RK together - the examples do work.
