Just out curiosity. What drove the decision to not use SIM card?

I am not sure where you got that impression–the Electron uses a SIM card. It may not be obvious in the photos that the SIM is underneath the board at one end.
You can buy data service from Particle using their supplied SIM or use your own SIM as you see fit.

Wow sorry.
That was my bad.
No idea either why I did not know that.
That puts the electron in a whole other light from my perspective.
Only drawback is that now I can’t find a reason not to spend some more money
