Let me begin with I am a first time Particle user. In 2019/2020 the Company I work for had some custom Particle E310 and B402 SoM devices added to a Custom PCB for us. I was with the Company at that time, but another engineer, who has since left the Company, did all the development. We have recently resurrected the project and I'm trying to set up either/both of these boards using the "Set up new device" option within the Sandbox. I tried to power up one of our original Rev 1 boards. It has an E310 (1 UFL antenna connection) Particle chip soldered down on it. When I power it up and plug it in to my laptop through the “Particle USB” micro-USB connector, Windows dings to notify me that I’ve connected to a USB device, but then I get an error message indicating it is unrecognized Windows USB device. Subsequently, the device detection fails during “the setup process".
I have a second Rev 2 board with a B402 (2 UFL antenna connections) Particle chip in a M.2 connector. When I power it up, and plug it into my laptop, there is no recognition of a connection established to a USB device.
Trying to get one or the other board connected in the Sand Box. Any ideas? I realize these boards are roughly 5 years old. Should I be using a newer Particle chip than the E310/B402?
Today when I plugged in the E310, Windows decided to load the Electron driver. I then continued with setup until it indicated that an update was required. The firmware update failed. As the E310 is a no longer supported 2G/3G device, I don't think it's worth pursuing further. That said, the B402 still is not recognized by my laptop when I plug it in. Nothing on Device Manager changes when I plug it in (Win 10). The status LED is blinking blue, at what I would say is a slow rate. Is there a particular Mode the unit must be in in order to connect my laptop to it and configure it? Thanks.
Blinking dark blue is an acceptable mode for the device to be in to configure it. However, it's rare for a B402 device to be in that mode, unless it is very old.
If you have exposed MODE and RESET buttons on your custom board, you could hold down MODE while tapping RESET. Continue to hold down MODE while the status LED blinks magenta (red and blue at the same time). Once it blinks yellow, release MODE. You may be able to set it up in that mode.
