Is it necessary an external watchdog timer for improving reliability?

I will use my particle electron outside for monitoring CO2 gases. , but it is indispensable for me maintaining a stable connection.

I tried a long time to get devices working without an external watchdog - but Iā€™d also put the TPL5010 in all my designs. If energy is a critical measure you can put your electron in SYSTEM_MODE(manual) and wake up your electron every x-minutes just to reset the watchdog timer, until your duty cycle has reached,ā€¦

EDIT: I use the implemented software-watchdog already, but in some cases this WD fails,ā€¦
