btw… on the original issue of a tap list and push it out to the web… instead of the complicated technical solution The issue I see is that you will have humans switching your slats etc… and they could make mistakes?
Why not to have a spark with user friendly GUI (maybe touchscreen) for a manual update?
pseudo code:
human hangs/replaces slate.
human wiggles fingers on touchscreen, selects via name and images.
Spark updates webpage, sends out twitter, and sends reminders after a few hours.
maybe even as iphone app for any of the employees?
