Expected availability of Ubuntu 24 build

Update it was just flash it to device, now i’m messing with kernel panic reboots. Getting there.

It’s been more than 2 weeks since @mrlambchop update on the build. Any progress on that. I was hoping the recent 24 build would be out by now. I don’t use the external devices currently. Will be using it for my server infrastructure mainly and mostly CLI libraries are incompatible with the old build. Currently tachyon device is mostly on standby until the recent release is there and using 2 raspberry pis as my main device only. Would appreciate the update and hoping for release date soon.

Hi,

How close is the team to releasing Ubuntu 24.04?

I’m sure that the Tachyon development has been a huge undertaking for Particle and the teams are doing their utmost to deliver an Ubuntu 24.04 build. You and the Support team are doing a fantastic job in resolving issues, updating docs, and providing technical insights on dev, tools, etc. This is all very much appreciated.

However, I think all of us would appreciate if you can share more on the release progress and the current bottlenecks that may be preventing a release.

The table below hasn’t been updated for quite sometime.

  • Is cellular connectivity & features working fully in 24.04?

If so, How does the cellular stability compare with that in 20.04?

If cellular functionality is incomplete due to issues with Qualcomm/Quectel code, What are the bottlenecks?

  • Audio support - No output in Desktop mode
How close are we to a fix?

  • GPS
This strikes as somewhat odd that it doesn’t work in 24.04, unless it’s tied to the cellular development.

Some clarification on the following issues would be useful.

  • Tachyon not able to boot from USB power alone
A patch was in progress sometime ago to resolve the USB PD power supply issue.

Is it a case that the proposed patch wasn’t sufficient to fix the issue and there needs to be a potential hardware fix?

  • HDMI display issues
The ‘gdm’ restart workaround exists. How is the code fix coming along?

Is there any chance of a 24.04 release by Labor Day?

Are we looking at a Fall (Oct/Nov) release? Hopefully a lot sooner!

Cheers!

After following this thread for much longer than i had expected i need to write a few things here as well…

After receiving (Finally!) the tachyon two weeks ago i was slightly disappointed that it shipped with a very outdated version of ubuntu and that there is, so far, no real way to update it to something more useful. I bought the tachyon on kickstarter in the hopes of having a replacement for my old nvidia tesla nano board for new(er) versions of my products.

Right now i struggle with ubuntu having way outdated python packages, the proprietary drivers as well as, what others have already spotted, a kernel with insufficient drivers for some hardware. Right now i havent tested the PCI-E port.. i didnt want to stomach that disappointment now.

So much fpr the rant.

I see, feel and know that this board is highly capable for smaller IoT AI stuff. Though i am struggling to get my computer vision running on version 20 i could already have a glimpse of the capabilities.. and whilst having 24.04 would not be a “fix all solution” with the click of a button it could make life much easier by at least having less outdated software and libraries to use. I would prefer Arch linux over Ubuntu/Debian any time but so be it.. a better than nothing solution to contine developing is still better than no solition at all.

Therefore i hope the community here can convince you to just release a 24 build.. even if you declare it unstable or alpha/beta/notforproduction whatever.. but give us a chance of having a system that might be more.. useful than focal with all its caveats. Just call it a “Better than nothing Beta” or so…

My tachyon is a paperweight right now. I’m not going to waste my time on it until this comes out, I don’t know what the holdup is. I don’t need cell connections so I don’t care if it works with that or not.

Yup it is frustrating i ended up be able to partially upgrade to ubuntu 22 but not 24 due to changes in systemd and incompatibilities with the current kernel, but i just got tired and putted in the box hoping to some day exists at least a usable firmware it is not supposed for end users need to hack so many. I just bought from another vendor the same hardware, it is a little bit bigger and doesn’t have modem but it can interface with one via pci lanes if i need it. At least the other vendor provides android 13, debian 13, qualcomm linux out of the box and are working in providing upstream ubuntu, with almost everything opensource just not some android parts and specific vendor stuff due to proprietary blobs.

Hi, this is really holding us up too. We are evaluating the board to be the computing unit for a commercial device, but it needs to run Unity builds. The Unity technical sales team is ready to spin up a custom build target for the Tachyon, but they need a test rig and they asked me the ETA. All I could say was “any day now”, but looking at this thread, it could be a lot longer. We can’t use the 22 build because it doesn’t include an GPU drivers, which are obviously critical in this use case.

Along with others, I’ve noticed a distinct lack of response from the Particle team regarding issues posted here by the community in the last 10 days or more. I’m not sure if this is a deliberate change in openness. However, it’s very unlike Particle and their mission to be transparent to their valued customers.

It’s disappointing that we have not heard from @mrlambchop regarding an update to the Ubuntu 24 availability or of any roadblocks preventing a release, plus updates to other issues like the imx519 camera autofocus not working.

On a project the size of the Tachyon dev there are bound to be hurdles of one type or another, and although there may be valid reasons for the silence it is not particularly good customer service.

Hopefully the Particle team will share some tangible progress soon and not keep their patient customers in the dark for long.

If you are in a hurdle an need a tip regarding another device from another vendor with the similar features set just let me know that i will PM you the device i’m using, i can confirm you that has out of the box opengl and vulkan working and i can drop by any test you need it has the same spec only lacks of the modem and gps but even that it will supported in the feature according with vendor via m2 slot i think at least the modem.

So… it is almost 12 weeks later.

I know Tachyon is for Particle serious business.

So is it for some of us and after having to rely on alternatives for half a year already i am pretty soon dumping tachyon altogether for further development. It is really a joke that a decent hardware as this has such a limited usability.

Hi DC25, that would be very helpful! I don’t know how to PM you on this platform.

@pzhine sure check your notifications i sent you the one I'm using right now.

pzhine, you are a new member so the option wasn’t available to you. I enabled it for you so you can click on a username and select Message to send a private message.

Granted that there are several other QCS6490 SoC devices in a Raspberry Pi compatible format, and I expect that there will be quite a few more down the line. However, none of them currently support integrated cellular 5G and a great cloud connectivity solution.

From a board design perspective, it’s pretty easy to come up with a QCS6490 Pi compatible board with Wifi, BT, and the usual MIPI/CSI connectors, etc. Adding an integrated cellular modem and providing “it just works” software with seamless cloud support adds a layer of complexity and development that some of these companies simply do not pursue or have a desire to provide.

Particle has a proven track record in delivering great hardware and software, together with seamless cloud connectivity. Yes, unsurprisingly there are a few hiccups. However, once these hurdles have been resolved, I fully expect that we’ll have a great QCS6490 cellular solution.

On the hardware side, I think Particle may have been a little ambitious omitting a micro HDMI port and relying on the USB C hub for HDMI. I would have added a micro HDMI and the audio interface on to the main board. Perhaps, we’ll see this in the next revision.

LOL let me laugh when even quectel provides one with a 5g modem on top of a QCS6490. I will believe when it is released something useful right now Tachyon is just a headless device with a hacked kernel, android bootloader and old unsupported ubuntu distribution.

Kind of worried at the lack of response by Particle. It’s been a whole month since we have gotten any updates on this and originally we were told we would get an update the next day. Right now Tachyon isn’t really usable between display issues and the old Ubuntu build.

This appears to be a repeating trend, there are multiple threads on this forum with “we’ll get back to you in x” and no follow up, or follow ups way outside of x.

I’ve built 2 RB3 Gen 2’s now. The instructions aren’t 100% accurate, but once you read between the lines, the flashing process works. Running ubuntu 24 on both.

I appreciate what you did there… but to me it is a joke that we have to rely, at this point already/still on some tutorials for different hardware configurations to have something we were sold to get in January of this year.

Even more enfuriating is, to me, the simple fact that it seems perfectly possible to have a ubuntu 24 (ffs.. why does it have to be ubuntu to start with?) in a matter of days rather than months (closing in on “a year”).

I know this is a huge project for particle and a demanding task… but after delaying the shipment of the hardware for more than half a year they could have waited until iit is actually usable.

Hi everyone.

Thanks for your continued patience. We are very close to delivering a working Ubuntu 24.04 build for Tachyon.

Over the past few weeks, the engineering team has made solid progress—resolving several key issues related to XBL and U-Boot, driver compatibility, and broader system integration.

Currently, our immediate goal is to produce a headless build with the necessary overlay tweaks in it. Expect a release in the next week or so. Thanks again for your patience and support!
