Ubuntu 24.04 on Tachyon - Early Access & Open Development

Still fighting instability with vanilla 24.04 (headless, 1.1.27 but same behavior with earlier versions too) trying to do basic dev work… got a debug board online and captured syscon and linux consoles but neither show anything at the time of the crash. Here’s a screenshot showing activity around the time of the crash/reboot which happens around 17:12:13:

Both of my boards exhibit the same behavior. Has anyone else seen this? I’m willing to keep debugging but would appreciate some guidance on next steps. The lack of anything in the linux console suggests a complete freeze of the CPU until a watchdog timer forces the reboot.

Hey kph, I was running the 24.04 desktop ROW version for some time, no issues and never crashed! I was using it headless and RDP to iMac - slow but usable, maybe for some reason that version is more stable? Might be worth a try Only changed back to 20.04 to test the IMX519 camera which is actually working now. I'll return to 24.04 when the camera fixes are incorporated.

Thanks for your comments. I have tried a lot of different configurations (ssh, adb shell, disabling CPUs 1-7, hardwiring speed governors, trying various linux kernel boot options, etc, etc) and I made some headway when running a single CPU but never completely resolved the problem. All of my experiments point to a load dependent and/or synchronization problem that’s triggering a low-level watchdog that forces a reboot. Either that or my hardware is flakey, but I doubt that because 20.04 is stable and both boards behave the same way.

The Qualcomm Linux docs describe debugging these kinds of problems - I’m waiting on permission from Qualcomm to dig into the details of their “Qualcomm Linux Debug Guide - Addendum”.

Hi, just installed tachyon-ubuntu-24.04-RoW-desktop-1.1.28. After flashing, it powers on and shows the login screen. Upon logging in as particle, it immediately hangs (pointer frozen on a blank screen) and then reboots. The status LED never changes from pulsing green to magenta.

I downloaded tachyon-ubuntu-24.04-RoW-desktop-1.1.27 and flashed it manually to make sure it wasn’t something in the latest release, but it behaves the same way.

Thoughts? Anyone else encountering this?

You mean it's working in desktop mode? I didn't think that was working yet and have been operating mine headless.

Well, perhaps not. Video output over USB-C is working, and the login screen is working, but maybe that's as far as they got. Would be great to have some release notes - are those available somewhere?

FYI, the instability with 24.04 on my TACH4NA boards resolved with version 1.0.24 of tachyon-u-boot. Onward.
