SmartBBQ: WiFi controlled 4 probe BBQ controller with blower output

Happy to help if you need to get the PCBs made and parts purchased

know a good contract manufacturer?

For a low quantity, SeeedStudio is suitable. Larger ones, the CM that Particle is using is great as well

Seeed was on the shortlist. i used their open parts library as a good judge of easily sourced components. was also looking at a local group with an O/S factory, pcbfast.com.au

the irony is that mark is working on this as a winter project (australia!)
we in the northern hemisphere are in the middle of BBQ season

There is no BBQ season in Australia, its aaallll year  Seriously, I cooked a whole snapper and beef short ribs yesterday, smoked @ 275F with a bit of apple wood and after the fish finished I switched to red gum and lowered the temp to 210F

Yesterday I placed an order for an initial prototype run of PCB’s. Also getting the case done, design has finished, its being issued to a 3d printer to check before sending to an injection molding place (expensive). Unless you’re really handy with a prototype case then you kinda need the enclosure to fit it to the bbq. This whole process takes a while, but hopefully in 4-6 weeks I can share the full box with you all.

thats a good lookin fish!
i made pastrami over the weekend.
brined a whole brisket for a week, smoked it at 150F for 7 hours, then popped it in the circulator for 48h @ 145F.
low n slow. fall apart tender. mmm…

@greatwitenorth, I do okay cludging my way through with the Particle Build tool, but I’ve never done any Android stuff. Also, I’m lazy. Is there an APK file for Android that you can share?

Thanks, Shep

Mark,
Thanks for the offer. I realized the circuit is simple enough I’m just going to build it on a perf board. Found some suitable mosfets in a through-hole package and I’m assembling right now.

How did you go with readings? What maverick style probes did you use?

any updates on the pcb or enclosure?

I just got my first kamado style grill, and have been weighing my options… heatermeter? iq? partyq? This looks way better as I already have a few cores lying around… good job!

well, I received the manufactured board just the other day, but am having some teething problems using photons. a) when they say they’ve updated their firmware after claiming them, it doesn’t actually mean they’re updated, time to go to the particle cli. b) the new chip isn’t compatible with the previous PWM libraries that folk like @BDub had kindly written.

I’m just about to switch to the old core and see how it functions with the board.

Ended up getting the Photon reading temperatures fine.

  • Had forgotten I remapped the pin inputs for PCB layout convenience
  • Photon firmware has a bug with sprintf and doubles, so you have to manually concat your strings before publishing them

I’ve encouraged the tireless peekay123 to update the PWM frequency code for the new chip, so that the fan doesn’t hum like fingernails on a chalk board when at low speeds.

Hi all, its worth the bump. Checkout https://Smartfirebbq.com!

What started as an idea at the pub (Bluetooth didn’t reach) ended up being a year of hard work at the kitchen table. Many thanks to @bko etc who helped when I was climbing the elctrical design learning curve, and @Avidan who gave great advice early on when I started to take this beyond just solving my own problem but perhaps being silly enough to take it on the commercialisation journey.

Anyways, some links:

Enjoy!

This is gonna be so sweet.

As the Donald would say…

Huge!

Congrats, big time. Now maybe @avidan can fund your US expansion!

i hope my pre-order money goes directly for such an expansion

I’m late to the game, but I also think a mobile/web app is essential. I actually don’t want any display on the the grill. The whole point for me is that I can see the smoker temp without going into the back yard, and get some kind of notification when the temperature goes above or below a set threshhold. I want an app interface to set different threshholds for different types of meat.

Anyhow, I’m just getting started. Will share whatever I figure out and maybe re-use some from this app.
