All right, I have been hoping all week that I would eventually be able to share this news as I was finally able to test it with a customer. Following my previous post, I went ahead and ordered a Boron LTE and, given my use case, I hit the 5mb limit within less than 90 minutes of use which was a disappointing outcome.
Then last week, I was browsing Amazon for something unrelated and somehow stumbled across this little guy for $30: TP-Link N300 Wireless Portable Nano Travel Router. This is a 2.4ghz travel router / access point / WiFi extender.
I ordered one and within the router’s settings, I a) unchecked the box for DHCP server and b) changed the settings from Router to Access Point. At that point it rebooted and I plugged the other end into one of the open LAN ports of my Netgear router, and proceeded to set up a brand new Photon and connect it to this AP. It worked!
I then shipped one to my customer, and had them repeat the same steps and plug it into the back of their Apple Airport router. After forgetting the previous WiFi credentials on the Photon, we were able to run through setup again and get it connected and breathing cyan on the first try. In the 15-20 minutes I was on the call with them afterward, both the WiFi and Particle Cloud connection were solid.
So for anyone else having issues getting a Photon or Argon connected to their router, this $30 magic box may help!
