Photon IoT board - Power without Battery Shield

Hello,
I am new to the Particle product line and am building a device that requires the ability to send data to a webservice. I noticed the Photon only has a usb input and wanted to know if it is absolutely necessary to obtain a battery shield to power the device away from a computer? Would using a USB battery suffice instead?

Thanks!

I usually use one of these whenever I’m using a lipo battery with a photon. You can connect the BAT pin to the photon VIN and GND to GND.

You could also use a USB battery “portable charger” and power the photon through USB.

Be aware that a lot of these portable power packs will turn OFF if the current drawn from the Photon is small. So be sure to find a pack that does NOT automatically turn off.
