If I ask my students to purchase a Photon 2, will an external antenna come with the purchase or must they buy it separately ?
And, is an external antenna necessary for wi-fi and ble?

There is a built-in trace antenna on the Photon 2 module that works for both Wi-Fi and BLE.
The external antenna is not included and is not necessary. When present and enabled in software it's used for both Wi-Fi and BLE.
