Extended IoT device lifespan with LTE Cat 1 adapter for Gen 3 Boron/Argon

With the gradual discontinuation of 2G and 3G networks in the EU, I wanted to share a project we’ve been working on to keep our Particle.io Boron and Argon devices operational. Instead of moving away from these devices, we developed a universal SoM adapter board that can replace the Gen 3 Boron and Argon modules while still using the Adafruit Feather pin layout.

Our goal was to create a seamless way to upgrade existing IoT setups without having to redesign everything from scratch or replace major components at existing client sites. Now, the end user can simply plug in the board, and the job is done. The adapter board allows us to swap in Particle’s B, M, or Muon SoM modules depending on our future communication needs (LTE Cat1, LTE-M, Wi-Fi, Satellite, etc.).

It’s been a really interesting project to work on, especially with the flexibility offered by the M.2 form factor.

I'm curious to hear if any of you have faced similar challenges with the 2G/3G phase-out and how you've approached solving it.

Hi Sebastien @Pheatus , nice board!

I imagine the feather pins are under the board.

I do not have an impending need, but people in the community may, so I'm tempted to ask:
is this design something others can use or try?

Thanks,

I heard about a product like "Particle B-Series SoM Adapter for Feather", but found it nowhere. Is there any information about this?

Thanks
