Data connection via RF24Ethernet

Hi all

So I have a bit of an odd networking requirement. I want to be able to create a mesh tcp/ip connection for all my Photons or RedBearDuos (because i need btle) to connect to, using a few 3g enabled Gateways to provide internet access to the rest of the nodes.

If i give the photon (or other) a connection via RF24Ethernet or something similar, will the Photon connect itself to the particle network and bet able to post / get firmware updates, or do they have to be connected via the traditional onboard WiFi to have this functionality?

I believe the firmware only knows about WiFi on the Photon and Cellular on the Electron. Other available communication methods will go unnoticed and unused by the default system firmware.
