An Access Control System for Makerspaces

This is a neat implementation of the Photon. I wouldn’t call it an IOT project because it is designed to be run with a dedicated server, but it’s a good example of how the Photon can be used in a non-cloud environment.
The purpose of the system is to limit access to potentially dangerous equipment to only those authorized to use the equipment. Our makerspace is located at a school, and the school can use our makerspace for shop and lab classes. So it was very important to develop a reliable access control system.
The best way to see this is to view two videos on YouTube. The first describes the hardware and system topology. The second video shows how the user interface operates.

There were plenty of challenges in designing the Photon code. We’ll share some of those challenges in the near future.
