Amazon Web Services Maintenance

Hi there,

This is just a friendly notice that there are some mandatory upcoming Amazon Web Services maintenance events that will impact this fine community site. The anticipated impact is minor but worth mentioning in case you happen to be on the site when it occurs:

  • 9/27, 9/28, or 9/29 between 6am-12 UTC, there will be 1-2 minutes where the database behind the site might be unavailable, so you may see some errors.
  • 9/29 between 1-7am UTC, there will be 1-5 minutes of downtime, where you may simply see a blank screen while the main web server is rebooted.

If you see any site disruptions outside of what is described here, please email me at joe at spark dot io.

Thanks,

-joe

Hi All,

Just a heads up that we had some community downtime this morning. It was unexpected as far as I know, and I’m looking into the cause.

Thanks,
David

Is there somewhere to report when it is down? i had a look at the status page a few times and it said it was normal, but it was down for over an hour for me.

Joe . spark . io. Hahahahaha!

That’s what I usually do but there’s probably going to be a reporting page/channel soon.

We have pagerduty setup to call / text / email us when issues arise, but it looks like that alert wasn’t working on the community site. It should have automatically updated the status page, and contacted us right away.

You can totally email us directly when something seems really broken, but please save that for major issues.

Thanks,
David

Hey All,

To avoid scheduled downtime from Amazon and other service providers, we preemptively rebuilt and restarted a number of the main hosted services. There were some brief interruptions (less than a few minutes total) but we should be back up and sailing again, we’ll continue to watch everything very closely tonight.

Thanks!
David

Hey Guys,

All of the AWS maintenance windows impacting Spark infrastructure have passed and our metrics have been looking good and healthy since this morning. These last couple of days were bumpier than we would have liked and we’re sorry for the interruptions. Also, thanks to the folks who pinged us directly when our alerting systems weren’t detecting issues–it is appreciated greatly!

Onward,

-joe
