Spark Rookie Help Call

Hello! This is my first time using Spark, and I kinda have no idea what I am doing. I got a Spark Core as a present, with no instruction at all on how to use it, except for the website link on the box. Can someone explain to me what is a Spark Core, and how do I connect it to my account and use it?

Thank you!

Hey and welcome to the community!

This is a copy paste from the kickstarter spark core campaign:

Spark Core: Wi-Fi for Everything (Arduino Compatible)

A tiny Wi-Fi development board. Arduino + Wi-Fi + ARM Cortex M3 + wireless programming + REST API = awesome.

there is a nice video that explains everything on that page:

The Core is a bit old these days though...

Hey!

Welcome to the Particle platform, I've got good news and bad news. Bad news first: the Spark Core was our first device and has been discontinued for 5+ years so you can't use our usual device setup method. The good news is that you can still set up and use a Spark Core, if you're willing to tinker a little. You'll need to install an old version of the Particle CLI 6 and then set it up over USB using particle serial wifi.If you run into any issues, let me know!

If this is a one time learning project, I personally wouldn’t bother with a Spark Core. As others have said it’s several generations behind what’s available today.

Do yourself a favor and pick up a Photon 2. It’s the latest WiFi capable product in the Particle Ecosystem, well documented, and feather form factor for using any featherWing for quick and easy prototyping.

If you are going to invest time and energy into learning Particle, you mind as well do it with the most recent hardware. Your future self will be thankful.
