I haven't hooked the core up via USB really, just piped voltage in via a power source and wrote code on the web CLI. I am not really sure how to get serial out of it, putty maybe?

Check out this thread, even if you don't have windows it should help. Sounds like you might though.

Does the Core drop completely offline or just disconnect from the cloud when a function takes longer than 10 seconds to complete?

Typically it drops back to trying to connect to WLAN if I remember correctly... then NET, then CLOUD.
