Photon hangs once a day

Under certain circumstances Particle.publish will block for up to 5 minutes, but it does eventually return. That's presumably longer than your watchdog timer.

It can be a bit confusing knowing whether a call to Particle.publish will be blocking. This note will hopefully clear some thing up.
