Battery Charging Circuit with Photon (Not off the shelf battery shield)

I am trying to build a rechargeable circuit on a matrix development board with photon. I want to make it with individual components from scratch. The battery is suppose to power the photon and be charged while the photon is plugged in.
I understand TP4056 is one of the options that I could use. But I am a novice at this and I would still want help with the circuit and peripheral components needed (capacitors, resistors).
Please help.

The SparkFun Photon Battery Shield is open source so you might start there, by looking at their schematic.
