I am a 5th Year Ph.D. Candidate in the Lutz Lab at Bioengineering department at the University of Washington working on improving the performance of existing rapid diagnostic tests using a smartphone. At my company, Hack-a-Joe Labs, we invent technology that converts existing dumb things in a home into smart, internet-connected, gadgets. At the fundamental level both efforts require similar mindset – reform existing (limited) resources to enable (augment) functionality.
