if this discussion got a bit off track (given you initial question).
But as you see that pointer thingy (when to use *, & and [] or not) is a big and mighty tool in programming but for that reason also all but trivial - especially for beginners.
If all off that technical “chit chat” seems overwhelming, don’t hasitate to ask - this community is full of savy, professional programmers willing and eager to help everyone who dares to ask.
And if the tech jargon gets a bit confusing, just shout: “Wait a minute! Can you say that in human language, too 
?”
