I want to measure the approximate volume to determine the percentage of water in a water tank. I researched a little and I think the most economical solution for my case is a waterproof ultrasonic sensor.

If the volume / dimensions of the tank are known, could you use a water level sensor to achieve the same goal, or make a digital switch? This would be a lot simpler.

Liquid level sensor

Water conducts electricity, so you could make a simple digital switch using water and two probe wires at the level you want to test for. (Just make sure the probes are sealed in.) When the switch reads LOW, the wires would no longer be conducting with the water so the water would be below that point.
