@rocksetta, what I said was in context of having the Pi on the Particle OpenThread network. However, you are correct that “slaving” a Xenon or Argon via serial to the Pi and using it as a bridge to the mesh is possible.

This is what I'm doing with a Xenon -> Pi (connecting the UART pins) for prototyping purposes. I got it working this morning.
