I think I read a similar thread a while ago where @mdma suggested as workaround to put the device into Listening mode (WiFi.listen()) to clean up the sockets and "immediately" after that finish listening via WiFi.listen(false).
And he'll be looking into a better solution.

Reset/re-initialize the external WiFi IC & UDP socket issues

Internally, the system will close all sockets when entering listening mode, so that might provide some kind of stop-gap solution, but it doesn’t feel like a good solution, just one that works! Is there any reason why the firmware app cannot clean up the sockets it creates?
