@ghawkins all very good thoughts and questions. The CC3000 does work with most 802.11n networks without putting them in 802.11g only; we’ve done so on a number of networks without any problem. What router are you using? It may be an issue with your particular router, or a particular set of routers. That’s not to say it’s not a problem - if it affects any group of people, it will cause tech support challenges - but hopefully it’s at least a relatively limited one.
Also, you said that it was configuration that wasn’t working; how are you configuring the CC3000? Are you talking about using Smart Config through TI’s Java Smart Config app?
