Updated to 1.4.4 and stuck

HI,

I teach a class once a year IoT. I have the Sparkfun Photon boards. As usual, I set them up with the mobile and updated to 1.4.4. This was a mistake as I found out. I needed to update to 1.2.1 first. I now can not connect to the board anymore neither can I flash 1.2.1. Any advice on how to recover those boards?
