Poor build quality possible refurb?

I received a particle new in box today and it’s looks like crap. Half the analog pins and half the digital pins have some sort of smoke damage. It looks like it was damaged and they attempted to fix it or something. The solder job is poor
and irregular on the A0 and A1 and the voltage pins. Also the analog read has values on all the analog pins that vary dramatically if set to analog read without anything attached.

Smoke damage? I see what might be considered excessive flux, but manufacturers often use no-clean flux that doesn’t need to be removed after soldering. It shouldn’t hurt the device as long as it hasn’t gotten in the switches or connectors.

I believe this is normal. Analog inputs need to have an input voltage and there is a limit on the source impedance that will work.

If you want to try a neat trick, with nothing connected:

  • Switch A0 to digital out
  • Write HIGH to A0
  • Switch A0 to INPUT
  • Read and print the analog value
  • Switch A0 to digital out
  • Write LOW to digital out on A0
  • Switch A0 to INPUT
  • Read and print the analog value
