I come from the Arduino world and was previously working on a datalogger type application. It became tiring real fast to poweroff/ remove the micro SD card at every development cycle, to ensure my software was doing the right thing.
With cloud functions / cloud variables, development speed is multiplied by 100x at least. Not having to worry about the connectivity (how to get your data out / commands in) makes it devastatingly easy to prototype software.
