Differences in relays

I’m in the process of gathering parts to build a 2 door garage opener using the photon. I have seen a project where they mount the photon to a bread board and connect to a generic relay using jumpers. I have also seen one where they mount the photon directly on a particle relay shield. Are the relays essentially doing the same work?

I’m trying to save where I can and the difference in price between the particle relay shield ($30) and a generic relay($7)is significant.

Depending on what you’re trying to control, they work the same. They ‘simply’ close/open a circuit. Be mindful of their ratings though, not every relay can handle the same conditions.
