Boron LTE BRN402 - Why is there a SIM card installed?

I've been using Particle's Boron 402's for a while now, all previously purchased as the BRN402 Kit.

I just picked one up on eBay, just the board, supposedly new. It has a Verizon SIM card installed. None of my other 402's ever had a SIM card nor did they need one to connect.

Does it need the SIM card installed? Could this mean it was used previously?

The previous owner probably attempted use it with a 3rd-party SIM card. You should remove the SIM card and also run firmware to switch back to an internal SIM card using setActiveSim.

Incidentally, a BRN402 with a Verizon SIM will probably only work for a few days before it's blocked by the network.
