Can the Boron LTE be used as a PPP modem under Linux using
pppd ? Connection is over USB port. I know the SARA-R410 modem
can.

That’s not supported. In theory you could make custom system firmware to do it, however it would be a lot of effort and basically require replacing Device OS with something else. It would make more sense to just get a USB cellular modem.
