@happicow, It appears 1.5.0-rc1 fixed the issue, and added a clean API (`SystemPowerConfiguration`).  
Although I didn't test it with a 3G Boron, here's a [sample link](https://community.particle.io/t/boron-solar-charging-with-1-5-0-rc1/54680/11) with a few results.
