I spent a year learning FORTRAN as a senior in high school back in 1979.
We learned binary, octal, decimal, and hexadecimal. Then Assembler Language, JCL, BASIC, and finally FORTAN on an IBM System 360 that used PUNCH-CARDS!!!

I went on to get degree in Computer Science in 1983 after learning on the latest IBM 5150 PC! No hard-drive - just two 5.25" floppy drives. I learned Pascal on the 5150. The Pascal compiler was 5 floppies and took 7 passes... IF you got everything right!
My digital watch today has more processing power.

I also learned COBOL - much to my father's dismay, as I was a math/science major.
'Why the heck are you wasting your time learning a business programming language??!!'
Ironic that COBOL was the only language I ever got paid to program in!! LOL
